“Home Surgeries” & Medical Malpractice

Medical Malpractice Law

As highlighted in a recent news article, during the past few months Tucson has become a hotbed of medical malpractice and illegal surgical procedures performed by unlicensed or under-qualified practitioners.

Now, after a string of deaths and hospital admissions for botched “home surgeries” and cosmetic procedures in 2014, Pima County authorities are warning area residents to avoid unlicensed operators.

In one of the most egregious cases discovered by the Sheriff’s Department, a 51-year-old man without medical licensing or training was arrested at his home near 8600 North Bobby Jones Drive.

According to authorities, the man had been performing an illegal liposuction treatment in his home when apprehended. And, police say that he had performed many other unsafe medical procedures over the past few years. They’re working to identify the bogus doctor’s numerous clients.

It seems that Tucson has become a haven for medical malpractice by unlicensed operators. Pima County’s huge population guarantees that unlicensed practitioners will always find at least a few people willing to pay “budget” prices for illegal medical procedures, especially cosmetic procedures to enhance physical appearance.

Some people don’t worry about the health consequences of medical malpractice until it’s too late. Others are aware of the dangers, yet they insist on economizing by having procedures done at home, foolishly avoiding a hospital’s lifesaving equipment and well-trained staff.

In any event, right now there are far too many dangerously under-qualified or unlicensed operators performing surgical procedures and medical treatments in Tucson. It’s time for a change.
